May 2012: Katy Goshtasbi Nominated For Business Woman of the Year Award by NAWBO San Diego

When is a good time to start working on my personal image so I can then work on translating it to my business image? 0

I get asked this question often enough, that I decided to write a blog post on it.  I often have business clients that want to make a change in their personal image so that they can work with me afterwards in having an effective business image that is in line with their personal image.

Often times, these clients have weight management concerns/considerations. They want to wait until they are at their ideal weight before we start working together on their personal image.

My response is always the same:  Working on your personal and business image is not an overnight process, just as working on our ideal weight is not an overnight process.  Even at our ideal weight, the scale “shifts” at least a pound or two here and there regularly. We are all human and there is no perfect weight/person. Self-confidence is measured from within us and not by what others see externally.

However, the process of working on your personal image will help you get to a comfortable and healthy weight.  One process does not come before the other. Rather, the two work hand in hand- you feel better about your personal and your business image improving, you also then feel better about your physical body and are spurred on to a healthy body image and weight.  It’s all about you doing something positive for yourself!

So please do NOT wait until you are at your ideal/target weight or place in life to work on your personal and business image. What if you are shooting at a moving target and never get to your target weight?  You don’t want to sit out on life and on having an effective image- you deserve an effective image, an image that will help you get to your ideal weight/life goal.  The proof is all my clients that have not waited it out, but have taken the plunge and emerged healthy, happy and satisfied.

Wishing You A Fabulous Image,

Katy

Punctuality and Our Image 0

My mother always insisted that we be everywhere right on time. For the most part it was manageable- she was coordinating and rushing us out the door.  At times though, we would run into last minute “issues” that would set us back. To this, mom would always say the following:  “it is not polite to be late because you are telling the host/other waiting party that their time and rules do not matter and your rules and timing is what is important.”

To this day, I try to live by this rule within reason.  Everyone has their dignity and their time is important. So if I’m going to be late for a meeting (or at times even a social event), I better have a good reason- something like the dog ate my car!

Let me preface this by saying I do understand that flexibility with others is key.  We should all understand that others have their own lives to lead that do NOT include us.  Therefore, as humans things come up that set us back.

I had a recent experience that set my entire day back.  My lunch appointment showed up late.  I often have a tight schedule. So I had allotted an hour for lunch followed by a 10 minute cushion and then a conference call.  As a result of my lunch starting late, I completely missed my conference call and now have to wait two weeks to speak to that person again.

What does this have to do with our image?  Well, I try my best to understand that others are busy, too. They may be late to meetings/lunches, etc with me.

However, it is our nature as humans to immediately form a judgment of a poor image of the tardy offender in our minds.   We extrapolate to assume, they are unorganized, don’t respect us and just don’t have “it” together- their business and personally, especially if the tardiness occurs more than once.  Believe it or not, it then takes the tardy offender a lot to overcome our impression of their image.

Tip:  always allot at least ten minutes extra as “cushion” to your estimated time of departure, just in case.

Wishing you a fabulous image,

Katy

Here's An Example Of What NOT To Do With Your Corporate Image 0

Dear Verizon Wireless:  Why did the following have to happen today?

I go into a Verizon store because my bluetooth is not working. There are roughly 15 customers there.  The employee at the door greets me. I tell her I need technical support. She rolls her eyes.  In response, I re-assure her it’s ok because I’m not one of the other 15 people who are there to buy phones, right? She says everyone else is there for technical support, too, and that my wait is ONE hour!

I left the store promptly. The employee was thrilled to cross me off her list.   Talk about poor image in the eyes of customers- unmotivated, unhappy employees and technical problems with devices.   Perhaps they are going for notoriety?

Verizon, please consider hiring me. I can help your image problem. The technical support issue is all you, unfortunately. Good luck with that one.

Wishing You A Fabulous Image,

Katy
