Self-Confidence & Leadership 0

I ended the last blog post with the notion of self-confidence. Specifically that people are attracted to someone with high self-confidence.   At Puris we use self-confidence, coupled with stress, as a big gauge to see how your personal branding is working.   The main result of our work with clients is that their self-confidence goes UP when we help them create an effective personal brand.

When you have high self-confidence, it means everything is working well for you, including your personal brand.  High self-confidence correlates to high productivity, high morale, reduced stress and effective behavior as an employee and a business owner.

It also is true that self-confidence is tied to effective leadership.  Leslie Pratch*, a clinical psychologist, headed such research at the University of Chicago.  Here she investigated the longer-term personality predictors of leadership.  The research found that there were definite gender differences involved with respect to being self-confident and being an effective leader.  Most notably for you and me, Pratch found overwhelmingly significant that women must have high self-confidence and self-esteem in order to be perceived as an effective leader.  Men on the other hand are more expected to be self-confident, so we don’t judge their leadership on self-confidence.

What does this mean for you?  If you are looking to grow your business or get promoted or just be taken seriously and noticed more- then you have got to be perceived in a leadership capacity of some form.  This means you must have high self-confidence and self-esteem.  A strong personal brand is based on high self-confidence.  The more you “get” your personal brand and develop it, the more your self-confidence grows.

No one wants to work with, promote, listen or follow someone who doesn’t appear, and is not, sure of themselves.  This is especially true if you are female.  So go out there and develop an effective personal brand to boost your self-confidence!

What Holds You Back From Your Business Success? 0

Do your own insecurities and fears hold you back from growing your business and having self growth? Does it feel like you are your own biggest obstacle to change and having a successful business? I was at a national business conference last week. It seemed a common topic is that we hold ourselves back from success. This theme runs especially strong through the younger generation of entrepreneurs.

If this rings a bell for you, stop and ask yourself what is holding you back? Why do you not believe in your own possibility of success when the rest of us are so sure of it for you? No one is going to tell you all the details about how to run a successful business or how to be a successful employee/professional. This is partly because the only person that has all the answers is YOU!

The answer can be found by spending time in self-discovery about who you are and how you want your business to run- essentially creating your personal brand. These answers boost your self-confidence because you have an action plan. Have a detailed vision of your future. Where do you fit in and how? What are your strengths and your weaknesses? Can you add employees/partners to become optimally effective? Do you have a realistic time-line for your self? All of these answers form your effective and optimal personal brand that get translated into your business brand.

Do You Suffer From Business Paralysis? 0

Another trend I see regularly from my clients and business owners is what I call, “business paralysis”.  I will often ask business owners certain questions regarding key personal branding components within their business.  For example, what type of target market they want to develop – or how they want to generally resonate with prospects and other businesses.

The response is unfortunately often the same.  The business owners tell me that they can’t seem to make a decision on this topic, so they have tabled the topic (often completely!) until further notice!  What this translates into is a business that has been derailed/delayed due to indecision and unorganized/unstructured planning and fact-gathering.

The business owner’s demeanor and general business posture follows the paralysis mentality- they often feel resigned to not succeeding and being a business failure.   Their personal brand is diluted because they come across as indecisive and lacking self-confidence.  Who wants to hire anyone like that?

This same “paralysis” applies to employees looking for a job and/or new career.  If you have been told “no” often enough in this economy, you are likely to think you are a failure and hence, go into paralysis over your competence in your given field.  Guess what happens then?  No one wants to hire someone who has a less-than confident personal brand.

What does this mean for you?  Own who you are, whether a business owner or job seeker/employee!  Just make a decision and keep moving forward.  Any decision is better than indecision leading to paralysis and a weak and inauthentic personal brand.  Even a “wrong” decision will mean you are moving forward and that is attractive to the rest of us because you are in control of your life and personal brand.  This shows you can handle our business and/or do a competent job as an employee.

Give it a try. The only failure is in not trying- I promise.
